What kind of help does your work need?

Line Editing

Line editing is the most common type of editing. I will make basic corrections in grammar, spelling, and mechanics, and pay attention to your phrasing, word choice, sentence structure, and paragraphing. Line editing eliminates awkwardness and redundancy. I will help you find the best way to express your ideas clearly and elegantly, making your writing more engaging and powerful.

This service is valuable for fiction and nonfiction works, and is particularly appropriate for scholarly papers.

The fee for line editing is $30 per hour.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is a more in-depth process than line editing. If you opt for developmental editing, I will review your entire manuscript to get a sense of its overall condition. I will analyze the fundamental building blocks of your writing, such as structure, theme, organization, plot, pacing, character development, and dialogue. Finally, I will make all the corrections I make in line editing. The result will be a sharper, more cohesive book that is a pleasure to read.

This service is most  appropriate for first drafts of fiction and nonfiction books. Novice writers especially will benefit from developmental editing.

The fee for developmental editing is $35 per hour.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the simplest form of editing, which means that it is the best choice for documents that are already fairly polished. Proofreading involves checking the document carefully for errors in spelling, grammar, and mechanics. I will make only essential corrections rather than focusing on elements of style.

If you have a manuscript already accepted for publication that needs a final review before going to press, proofreading is the best choice.

The fee for proofreading is $25 per hour.

Estimates and Free Samples

Because it can be hard to estimate the hours of editing your work will require until I actually begin, I offer a free sample to new potential clients wanting line editing or developmental editing. If your manuscript is at least 25 double-spaced pages (not including notes, references, and/or figures), send me up to five double-spaced pages representative of the whole manuscript. I will edit this sample and provide feedback at no charge. This will let you see how I can help you, and it will give me a good basis on which to estimate the cost of editing the entire manuscript.

College and Graduate Students

I frequently edit papers by graduate students, but I accept theses and dissertations on only a limited, case-by-case basis. Fees for grad students are discounted to $2 less per hour than the fees listed above, with the exception of proofreading, which is not discounted. Contact me for more information.

Because college assignments are often graded partly on grammar and organization, I cannot accept work from undergraduates. If you need help with undergraduate projects, contact your university's writing center.

Tight Deadlines

I try to give priority to clients with hard deadlines, but I aim to balance my time commitments to all my clients. If you need your work turned around in seven days or fewer, there will be a surcharge of $50 or 20% of the total bill, whichever is greater.

Other Projects

I am available for other publishing-related tasks, such as compiling indexes or creating e-books. Contact me for more information.

Payment

I will send you an invoice via PayPal. The invoice can be paid through PayPal, or you can opt to use Venmo or mail a check.
